Artist Bio: Jan Jan
Summarizing an artist’s ethos and music in a way that feels authentic is a sensitive task, but one I thoroughly enjoy. I was honored when friend and artist Jan Jan asked if I would craft her bio, which now lives on her Cold Summer Records Artist Page. I was given a wide creative berth with this piece, and both the artist and myself were thrilled with the result.
Somewhere in the Mojave desert, a metallic pink, bedazzled flip phone rings, and Jan Jan emerges from the Joshua trees to answer.
No manic pixie dream girl, Jan Jan is a musical force, combining chill bedroom pop with lyrics as raw and original as they are infectious. Her songs firmly plant their way in the back of your brain where they stay, like sonic glitter, leaving you humming their tunes for eons.
With influences like Feist, Karen Carpenter and Regina Spektor, Jan Jan has crafted a sound that is both entirely new, and also deeply relatable. Her gossamer melodies will find a home on playlists of all kinds, from 90s pop to rom-com soundtracks, and more. Jan Jan composes technicolor soundscapes as bewitching as her vibrant personality.
Born Jan Rachel Sicam, the name Jan Jan started as a playful family nickname, and eventually became her musical moniker. At the tender age of 16, Jan Jan opened for Filipina singer and actress Sarah Geronimo while wearing her prom dress.
Jan Jan’s debut EP ‘how do you do’ featuring the single melting into the night, is available on all streaming platforms now!
